Edward Burne-Jones: 199 Masterpieces (Annotated Masterpieces) (Volume 17) Details
This Art Book with Foreword and annotated reproductions by Maria Tsaneva contains 199 selected drawings and paintings of Sir Edward Burne-Jones. Sir Edward Burne-Jones was the greatest painter of the second generation Pre-Raphaelites. His aim in art is best given in some of his own words, written to a friend: "I mean by a picture a beautiful, romantic dream of something that never was, never will be - in a light better than any light that ever shone - in a land no one can define or remember, only desire - and the forms divinely beautiful - and then I wake up, with the waking of Brynhild." He considered that art should be valued as an object of beauty engendering a sensual response, rather than for the story or moral implicit in the subject matter. In many ways this was antithetical to the ideals of Ruskin and the early Pre-Raphaelites. The earth, the sky, the rocks, the trees, the men and women of Burne-Jones are not those of this world; but they are themselves a world, consistent with itself, and having therefore its own reality.

Reviews
I was very disappointed to find that all of the art reproductions in this book are black and white. Plus the paper is cheap, nearly newsprint. I checked again and nowhere on the Amazon page does it indicate that the entire book is in black and white. And since the images were copied from color, apparently not converted, many of them are muddy. Furthermore, this is supposed to be "Annotated Masterpieces" and there are no annotations unless you count indications of medium. These are not consistent, and neither are the indications of dates. You could make this yourself at the library with a good copier, and if it were a color copier you'd end up with something better!
