This is an essential book for Blake scholars and aficionados alike. Cooper shows that historicist approaches are important in understanding Blake--Cooper uses historical background to build his arguments. But, as he also shows, Blake's own practice was not to reproduce the history, but to transform and go beyond it to a vision of society and humanity that is universal in scope, Blake incorporates history into what he called "Eternity"--his visionary time. But Blake wrote, "Eternity is in love with the productions of time," and Cooper shows that poetry and art are the way that the imagination can effect real change. Point value supports infinity, and infinity supports point.
